A resin mold is manufactured using flexible rubber and is helpful in casting resins into various sorts of shapes. Popular uses of resin molds include manufacturing jewelry parts and plastic components for use in manufacturing industry. There are plenty of materials which can be used for making a mold. The most prominent among such materials is silicon as it is the most versatile in the lot. There is absolutely no need for a separating agent when using silicon mold and this is a fact.

Shapes: One can have molds of various shapes; air planes, cars, animals, superheroes and so on – there is no dearth on the options with respect to the shapes of molds. However, resin mold has to be ensured that the mold is perfect from inside and there are no irregularities. Otherwise, the finished product would not be perfectly smooth and a lot of rework would be needed afterwards.

Resin mold making:

The resin mold is given a three-dimensional shape by using an object of suitable shape, known as a model. For making a complex mold, a container is used to hold a model and fluid rubber is poured over it. The rubber is cut after drying and each of the two pieces becomes a resin mold in itself.

It is also possible that a resin mold may lose its shape after repeated usage over the years. To prevent distortion of a mold, one can use a back up mold to give the required physical support to it. Such a back up mold is usually made of stringent material and is quite useful in preventing damage to the primary mold. Such back up molds can be made from a range of materials such as wood, plaster or even fiberglass.

Curing the mold:

A resin mold can have an irregular surface after its creation and application of a separating agent. To cure the irregularities on its surface, casting resin can be poured over it. So as to create almost identical pieces, a particular mold can be used a number of times. The back up mold can enhance the life of a mold as it prevents the mold from inherent damage every time it is used. Colors of one’s choice can be added to the resin during resin molding to provide a suitable color to the finished product.

While adding the resin to the resin mold, some precautions have to be followed. One of the most important precautions is to add the molten resin mold pretty slow to avoid formation of bubbles. In case formation of bubbles takes place even after taking precautions, you can easily clear them off by using a toothpick.

Another aspect which has to be taken care of during resin molding is to pour enough resin into the mold. Sort of lips can start forming on the back of the mold due to insufficient resin and this can be fixed by pouring a little extra resin on the back and it would become flat.
